The story

Between 1999 and 2002, James Murphy is a musician and producer surrounded by people making work while he measures the distance between his taste and his own accomplishments. Before LCD Soundsystem exists, the fear that everyone younger has already passed him is both a comic burden and an obstacle he cannot critique away.

Grief, envy, recording work and combustible relationships with other artists change what he is prepared to risk. Judging somebody else’s record is safer than making one that can be judged. The first LCD live band comes together through trial, replacing a smooth origin myth with the uncertainty of people learning how to make something happen. The ending is a vulnerable performance rather than a coronation. This unauthorized dramatization treats the useful stakes as the decision to work before success has made that decision look inevitable.
