The story

A failed screenwriter in a Missouri town has spent years imagining the life he ought to have had. When a movie star arrives and begins dating the woman he has loved for years, the local man finds a visible antagonist for an old grievance. He decides to become the protagonist who finally wins her.

Glen Powell is not behaving like the villain the man needs. He is a movie star living his own life, while the production brings attention and opportunity to people around them. Each attempt to force the story toward its proper ending creates another humiliation. The screenwriter makes his circumstances worse by treating other people as supporting characters in his own fantasy. His final opportunity is not a guaranteed romance but the possibility of stopping the lie about who he has become. The celebrity satire remains a restricted sample by author choice.
